Shimshal is the remotest village of Hunza in its east near Chinese border and is tucked admist rugged mountains, glaciers and snowy peaks.

In 1936, British Political Agent in Gilgit coined the phrase, ‘the remotest settlement in the Empire’ for Shimshal. Though no more part of British Empire, the fact is still true, because, not to talk of high passes & glaciers, one has to walk for good three days to reach the main village. Valleys just beyond the village are part of Khunjerab National Park where Marco polo, ibex, sheep, marmot, snow leopard and other unique species can be spotted. These seldom-visited upper valleys offer wide potential for trekking and mountaineering.

From Passu, after a jeep ride to Dut, shepherd’s huts, on the under construction jeep trail being built by Shimshalis, three days trek takes us to Shimshal.
