CHITRAL TO HUNZA TRAVERSE
Over Karumbar and Chilinji Passes

Grade: Moderate (Crossing Chilinji Pass is strenuous)

Described as the 'best trek of the world' this route has been opened recently for tourists, after the fall of Soviet Union. Situated in the immediate south of the strategic Wakhan Corridor it is one of the loveliest treks in the mountains of Northern Areas. Most of the route is easy walk through unspoilt lush green villages and meadows of Hindukush and Karakorum ranges, and next to Pamir mountains, where we come across shepherds of Upper Chitral, Ishkoman and Hunza with flocks of yaks, goat, sheep and horses. There is possibility of climbing many 6000 meters virgin peaks. Boroghil Pass leading to Wakhan Corridor, has been the easiest route for invaders as well as traders throughout the history.
From Boroghil one can also cross the historic Darkot Pass to Yasin Valley. Our route involves crossing two contrast passes for while Karumbar Pass (4188 m) is a marshy plain oozing water from the slopes to the serene lake, Chilinji Pass (5250 meters) is a steep climb on ice.

From the top of Chilinji Pass, there are panoramic views of the snowy peaks of the northwestern end of Karakorum Range.

Ziarat is a remote village with a legendry holy shrine in the northeastern corner of Hunza. This trek can also be carried out in reverse order from Hunza to Chitral. Those who do not want cross high Chilinji Pass can trek down the Ishkoman Valley.

Our trek starts at Dobarghar, Yarkhun Valley in Northern Chitral where we reach by jeep. Here we will hire porters to carry our gear & food. We will pass through the lush green villages and summer pastures of Kishminja, Boroghil, Lashkargaz and Margech with a day reserved here for exploration before reaching Karumbar Lake. Then trek to Shuinj and cross Chitibouy Glacier to Sukhtarabad. Cross Ishkoman River by rope bridge to step into the Karakorum Range in Warghut Jungle and cross Chilinji Pass to Chupursan Valley. Walk further down to Baba Ghundi Ziarat (Shrine) and board jeep to the border village of Sost at Karakorum Highway. Next day drive to Khunjerab Pass and return for out bond journey on Karakorum Highway, which includes Karimabad and Gilgit.
